Hatchery History
The Wainsford Hatchery closed in the summer of 2012 after several years of herd work
by Paul Eliot and a dedicated team of helpers.
Thankfully his legacy is not completely lost to the river as the teams continue to
work with a series of micro-hatcheries around the district to produce parr. This
work is vital to hold off some of the worst effects of negative environmental impacts
from the river suffers.
Trefalga Farm Hatchery is used for stripping the eggs from where they are taken to
three satellite hatcheries. These micro-hatcheries are run by dedicated volunteers
who monitor and maintain the sites on a daily basis.
So far for 2012 a total of 5 small hen and seven cock fish were donated to the hatchery.
This resulted in a total of 13,000 eggs being available to the hatchery sites with
5,000 remaining to be looked after at at Trefalga Farm. This is well below the 35,000
allowed by the EA and highlights the importance of anglers participating in the conservation
effort by contributing fish caught in the autumn and winter season. The higher costs
associated with this scheme mean we need monetary support from as many people as
possible to ensure we can carry on through 2013 and beyond.
